Sun Damage

What is sun damage?

Sun damage refers to when the skin is exposed to excess sun light and UV rays which can cause signs of “photoaging”. Wrinkles, loss of elasticity, uneven skin tone, skin discolouration, pigmentation; appearance of age spots, brown spots and freckles, melasma, broken capillaries and redness are all part of sun damage conditions.

What causes this concern ?

Sun exposure increases uneven production of melanin, damages skin cells forming pigmentations and stretching of blood vessels and the skin, damaging the elastin beneath the skin causing skin to lose its form.

Exposure to UV rays can result increases the chance of pigment production. i.e UVB rays can lead to over production of melanin leading to tan and even sunburn. UVA rays can be more damaging and penetrate deep down skin layers causing pigments like sunspots, age spots and other pigmentations.

Sun damage can also lead to  “premature aging”. You may start to see some aging symptoms and make you look older than your actual age. Common signs of premature aging can include: sudden changes of skin texture, pigments, dryness, uneven skin tone, fine lines etc.
